PEARL — Lucas Sims made his debut at Trustmark Park on Sunday and showed some of the potential that has made him one of the top pitching prospects in the Atlanta Braves’ organization.

He also showed a flash of wildness, and his teammates continued to show the same ineptitude at the plate that has plagued them for long stretches this season.

Sims struck out eight batters in 5 2/3 innings but also walked five. Two of those went on to score, and the Mobile BayBears scratched out a 3-0 win in the finale of a five-game series.

Sims was the Braves’ first-round draft pick in 2012 and was promoted to Double-A last week. He won his first start with Mississippi but has struggled with his control since the call-up as much as he’s impressed with a mid-90s fastball and good breaking pitches.

In 9 2/3 innings over his two starts, Sims has walked 11 batters and struck out 11 while only allowing three hits. It was the walks that came back to hurt him on Sunday.

Sims issued two walks in the third inning before Zach Borenstein delivered an RBI single to left to bring in the first run of the game. In the sixth inning he issued a two-out walk to Socrates Brito before leaving the game. Reliever Bryton Trepagnier walked the next batter, then gave up a two-run double off the wall in center field by Rudy Flores that gave Mobile a 3-0 lead.

Mobile didn’t score again, but neither did the M-Braves. They got seven hits in eight innings off of BayBears starter John Omahen (4-0) — Godfrey had three of them — yet were shut out for the 10th time this season and third time in this series.

The M-Braves have scored a total of eight runs in their last seven games. They’ve scored one run or less in six of those, yet somehow have won three of them to stay in contention in the Southern League South Division. Mobile moved 1 ½ games in front of the M-Braves and Pensacola.

Omahen walked two batters and struck out six on Sunday. Reliever Silvino Bracho walked the leadoff batter in the bottom of the ninth inning, then struck out the side for his 11th save of the season.

The M-Braves have today off, then open a five-game series at Birmingham — the second half leader in the North Division — Tuesday night.
