This weekend is National Pet Adoption Weekend and Coldwell Banker All Stars LLC and Paws Rescue are encouraging pet lovers to add to their brood.

“We would just like the pets that are in our care to have homes,” Leigh Connerly of Paws Rescue said.

All cat and dog adoptions from Paws Rescue on Saturday and Sunday will be half off for adoption weekend. Dogs will be $50 and cats will be $12.

The two organizations will team up Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at PetSense, 3405 Pemberton Square Blvd., to support pet adoption and to take applications.

“A house isn’t a home without a pet,” said Amy Melton, who works in marketing at Coldwell Banker.

The adoption process takes a couple days because of their application procedures.

“We don’t adopt on site,” Connerly said. “We have an adoption policy process.”

All those who apply to adopt are screened by a home visit and a veterinarian reference before the pets are placed in the home.

PetSense will have cats on hand and Paws Rescue will bring a couple dogs for the public to see.

“People can at least see the pets that we have available for adoption, or they can go to our website,” Connerly said.

The story and picture of available pets are posted on their website, pawsrescuepets.org. There are about 50 pets available for adoption through Paws Rescue, but animals that are going through heartworm treatment and other aliments are not posted on the site until they are fully ready for adoption.

The rescue is no-kill and is currently limited in space.

Connerly works to match the right pet to the right home.

“We want to make sure its a good fit and that everybody’s happy and that its forever,” Connerly said.

Melton said people’s temperament and personality signal what kind of pet they would bond with the best. She said she looks forward to connecting pets to owners.

“Somebody that has small children, they’re going to want something that’s active that they can run around in the backyard with,” Melton said.

Nationally, Coldwell Banker Real Estate, LLC and adopt-a-pet.com came up with the idea to collaborate and find homes for pets. Melton said there are 6 to 8 million animals in shelters and the corporation wanted to lessen that number. The nationwide goal is to have 20,000 pets adopted, but Connerly has bigger hopes locally.

“I’d love for all of them to be adopted,” Connerly said.
