About five dozen children got school supplies Saturday during a giveaway at House of Jacob Community Church.
The event ran from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church in the former Williams Funeral Home at 3400 Washington St.
“We had people lined up by 9:30,” event organizer and church member Edna Brooks said.
In addition to the school supply giveaway, nearly as many adults received items in a clothing giveaway sponsored by the 40-member church
“We’re a small church, but we try to do big things for the community,” Brooks said.
The school supply drive is held annually in honor of Elnora Gallaway, said event co-organizer, Naomi Short.
“She was one of the church mothers,” Short said. “She was the first person who gave us a large donation to get it started.”
The crowed was down from pervious years, Brooks said.
“We think it was because of tax-free weekend,” Brooks said. “We just weren’t getting as may as we thought.”
In the majority of cities across the state, most clothing and shoes were available tax-free Friday and Saturday.
Anyone interested in receiving school supplies from the church can visit any Sunday after services or call 601-667-9536.
