Scott sisters to sign books at library

Two sisters whose life sentences were suspended in 2011 on the condition that one donate a kidney to the other will be speaking and signing their new memoir Saturday at Warren County Vicksburg Public Library.
Jamie and Gladys Scott will be giving a lecture and signing copies of their memoir “The Scott Sisters: Resurrecting Life from Double Life Sentences,” from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.
The sisters were convicted of two counts of armed robbery — a crime they say they never committed — in 1994 and sentenced to two life sentences.
“The sisters maintain their innocence, and although still on parole, this tell-all book is their opportunity to take the stand, which they were advised not to do in court. This poignant and inspiring story of courage and hope is now available wherever online books are sold,” the book’s publisher LeVendra S. Williams said in a press release.
They were released after then-Gov. Haley Barbour commuted their sentences on the condition that Gladys donate a kidney to her ailing sister.
The Scott sisters’ attorney and advocacy groups have long said $11 was taken in the robbery, arguing life sentences were excessive for such a small sum. That amount is in dispute, though: One of the victims at trial testified he was robbed of about $200, while a 14-year-old boy involved in the robbery testified his cut was between $9 and $11.
The Vicksburg appearance is one of several on a multi-city book tour by the sisters. Ezell McDonald, who once owned a downtown bookstore, arranged it. She first met the sisters at a poetry reading in February in Jackson.
“I asked them if they had thought about writing a book. They said they would and it has been published,” McDonald said.
