After about three weeks without rain and at least four days of triple-digit temperatures, rain fell on Warren County.
Marc McAllister, a forecaster with the National Weather Service office in Jackson, said the rain is part of the leading edge of a cool front moving into the region from the northwest. He said rain was expected through the morning with a possible repeat Tuesday afternoon.
The rains began falling in the area about 5 a.m. preceded by winds and thunder. According to gauges at the city of Vicksburg’s Water Treatment Plant on Haining Road, .71 inches of rainfall was recorded since 6 a.m. Monday. Monday’s high was 102.
While city and county emergency management officials reported no problems with street flooding or landslides in the area, Entergy Mississippi’s outage website indicated power outages scattered across the county affecting about 39 customers, most occurring between 5 and 6 a.m.
McAllister said the hot weather will continue at least through the day, but is expected to improve.
“We’re not going to see temperatures reach the 100s, but we will see temperatures in the (upper) 90s today and a heat advisory remains in effect,” he said.
He said temperatures are expected to level off during the rest of the week.
“We’ll see a cool down over the next few days,” he said. “We’ll get more seasonable readings with highs 90, 94, and lows in the upper 60s to lower 70s.” He added the heat index that has been a part of the recent hot weather is not expected the rest of the week.
