After 701 days, 34 consecutive matches and two full seasons, the Vicksburg High volleyball team finally got to walk off the court a winner.

The Missy Gators won their season opener over Canton 3-1 Monday for the first three-set match victory in school history, and their first win of any kind in nearly three years. It was also the first division win in school history.

Jade Douglas had 11 hits and seven digs, while Mikayla Banks and Destiny Allen each had three assists and three aces. Allen also led the team with five spikes.

The Missy Gators took the first two sets 25-20 and 25-11, lost the third 26-24, then hung on to win the fourth 25-23.

“It was scary. We won the first two (sets) and you could see the look of panic on their faces,” said Aimee Scribner, who is in her second year as Vicksburg’s coach. “It was a huge confidence booster for these girls. We set a goal to finish a game, and win a (match). It was a win and a district win. Now we need to set some new goals.”

Vicksburg High started its volleyball program in 2011 and went 0-2. It won twice in 2012, but both were two-set matches in tournaments. It had never won a full three-set match.

Its last win was 2-0 over Meridian on Sept. 15, 2012, in the Ridgeland Tournament. That was followed by 34 straight match losses in which it had only won two games total.

Now, the Missy Gators will try to start a different kind of streak. The next match is Thursday at home at 6 p.m. against Yazoo County, which has not had a winning record in eight seasons and finished 1-7 last year.

“They’ve got a win underneath their belt and went crazy over it,” Scribner said of her team. “They have it in them to win again.”
