After nearly every one of St. Aloysius’ 82 touchdowns last season, the routine became the same almost to the point of being boring.

Casey Griffith jogged onto the field, set his mark, the snap and hold went down, he kicked the ball through the uprights, and a second big cheer went up from the crowd.

Griffith repeated the pattern on 75 of those touchdowns — in a row. His first extra point of the season was blocked, then he didn’t miss another one the rest of the way.

Now a senior, Griffith is trying to keep the streak alive. He’ll carry it into the 2015 season when the Flashes open up tonight at Cathedral, and has every intention of continuing it for as long as he can.

Coincidentally, Cathedral was the team that accounted for his lone miss last season, when it came up with a block following the Flashes’ first touchdown of the season.

“I’m going to try to go all season with it,” Griffith said. “It’s awesome. It makes you feel like you’re doing something out there.”

Griffith’s accuracy on PATs was a major weapon for the Flashes during their run to the 2014 MHSAA Class 1A championship game. While other teams struggled in the kicking game and often chased lost points by going for two-point conversions, St. Al knew it could add one every time.

After two or three touchdowns, the points added up. It also added to the team’s confidence.

“Every time we scored a touchdown, we knew we were going to get that extra point. It was just a given,” junior wide receiver Brandon Teller said. “After every one you just give him a pat on the back and you’re like, ‘All right, on to the next one.’”

Griffith has confidence he can keep the streak going this year, but said the biggest challenge will come from the other parts of a successful attempt. The Flashes lost long snapper Drake Dorbeck and holder Connor Smith to graduation. Brandon Jones and Joshua Brown, respectively, are currently the replacements in those positions.

“It’s a big accomplishment,” Griffith said of the streak. “Losing Connor and Drake, though, is going to have a big effect on me. We’ve been working on it. I’ve got Joshua (Brown) coming in and holding. We’re still working on a snapper. We haven’t found one yet.”

While he tries to continue the streak, Griffith is hoping to get more chances to kick field goals this season. He only attempted six last season and made three, largely because St. Al’s offense usually put the ball in the end zone instead of bogging down in field goal range.

Griffith, who also plays for St. Al’s soccer team, worked during the offseason to improve his range to about 40 yards, and said the lack of in-game work had a lot to do with his mediocre accuracy last season. A better field goal rate could also lead to some college offers after the season.

“I wasn’t out there as much on field goals. I only had about six attempts. I need to get more experience out there,” he said. “I’ve been to a few camps. I haven’t had any offers. I’ve got the leg, I just need to work on my consistency.”
