Right from the start, it was obvious it was going to be a long night for Porters Chapel Academy.
St. Andrew’s returned an interception for a touchdown on the first series of the game, picked off two more passes in the first quarter, and did all of its scoring in the first half as it routed PCA 35-0 Friday in the season opener for both teams.
“We played hard. We fought. We were just outmatched,” PCA coach Wayne Lynch said. “They’re big and fast, and they were good. We just couldn’t hang with them.”
Jack Blumenthal ran for two touchdowns for St. Andrew’s. PCA held the line in the second half to keep the game from getting even more out of control, but didn’t get on the scoreboard.
“We played well in the second half. We started to turn things around. We never got on the scoreboard, but we started playing defense and did a better job stopping the running game,” Lynch said. “We didn’t quit. If I had to brag on my team for one thing, that’d be it.”
PCA will play its home opener next Friday against Riverdale.
Central Hinds 45, Union Christian 20
Tanner Leggett ran for 89 yards and three touchdowns, Dallas Martin scored on a fumble recovery and a punt return, and Central Hinds opened the season by beating Union Christian.
Kile White returned a kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown as the Cougars scored on offense, defense and special teams.
Kicker Gunar Robinson booted a 27-yard field goal and also went 6-for-6 on PATs.
“All three phases played well. It wasn’t all offense by any means,” Central Hinds coach Lance Teasley said.
SIA 64, Hebron Christian 48
Austin Herraney rushed for 170 yards and three touchdowns and Cole Delaney had 162 yards and four touchdowns as Sharkey-Issaquena ran its winning streak to 29 games with a season-opening victory over Hebron Christian.
SIA, the two-time defending MAIS eight-man champion, has not lost a game since the 2012 season. Extending its winning streak into a third year was a big goal, coach Hunter McIntire said.
“That feels great. We talked about that with the team, how we want to accomplish the small goals but also look toward the bigger goals,” McIntire said. “Having a streak that goes into three seasons is not something a lot of teams can say that they’ve done. But it’s not the only thing we’re shooting for.”
