The momentum the Vicksburg Missy Gators gathered from a doubleheader sweep in the Warren Central Invitational couldn’t carry over Tuesday. They committed 14 errors and suffered their first loss of the season, 19-11 to Florence.
Head coach Michelle Fisackerly addressed her team about the errors after the game and said if it wasn’t for the mistakes they could’ve won. Jazmin Green was 2-for-4 with a single, a double and three RBIs. Mya’h Wright went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. The Missy Gators scored at least 10 runs for the third consecutive game.
“We put our head down a little bit and we need to work on that. It wasn’t a horrible game,” Fisackerly said. “The errors hurt us but we had some great plays. There are negatives but there’s a lot more positives and we have to focus on both of those to make a better team.”
Two of the main contributions to the team’s errors were missed ground balls and miscommunication.
The Missy Gators will have a chance to redeem themselves when they travel to Florence Thursday.
“That’s just part of the errors. We didn’t have that problem Saturday. I don’t know what happened tonight, but we’ve got them Thursday and we’ll see what happens then,” Fisackerly said.
In the top of the fourth inning the Missy Gators missed three ground balls and the struggle continued throughout the game.
Lack of communication started in the top of the third as girls looked confused to make the right play. More miscommunication in the seventh inning left Wright perplexed on a center field to first base play, which could’ve been an out.
“You can’t be perfect every game and everybody deserves a bad game and I just think that was this case,” Fisackerly said.
However, the Missy Gators made routine plays at home plate and first base, and Olivia Oakes caught a line drive before tagging a player out at third for a double play.
The hitting of Green and Wright in the early innings kept the Missy Gators in the game.
“At the plate I was just worried about not being in front of the ball and not stepping out too far in front and wait on it and just settling down. That was my whole thing tonight was just settling down,” Green said.
Fisackerly talked about her girls hitting the ball too soon. Green, a senior, has had five years to work on her swing.
Green said it takes a lot of discipline to learn when to hit the ball. After a while, a player begins to feel the pitch and knows when it’s not their pitch.
After Green’s second at-bat almost resulted in a home run, the Florence coach adjusted his outfield to be ready for Green’s strength.
“I felt like maybe I was hitting the ball a little hard,” Green said, laughing.
Even though the game didn’t turn out how she wanted, she was excited to use her strength and IQ to bring her teammates home.
“Greatness: being a team player, leader, keeping the game going, picking the team up, picking the game up when everybody needs it,” she said.
