The St. Aloysius girls’ soccer team finally got a tough test, and passed it with flying colors.

Sydney Mathis scored the go-ahead goal in the sixth minute of overtime, and the Lady Flashes hung on to beat Indianola 4-3 Tuesday in a key District 1-AAA matchup.

St. Al improved its record to 7-0 with the win over the team widely regarded as its closest competition within the district. St. Al won each of its first six games this season by at least six goals.

Tuesday’s contest was a bit tougher.

Brooklyn Breithaupt scored to put St. Al ahead 3-2, but Indianola converted a penalty kick in the final minute of regulation to tie it. Mathis’ goal put the Lady Flashes back in front, then they switched to a defensive alignment for the remainder of the first 10-minute overtime period and all of the second to preserve the lead.

“We possessed the ball during most of the game, but we couldn’t find the back of the net,” St. Al coach Scott Mathis said. “I’m very proud of the effort these girls gave today. They stick together and gave it all they could and they won the game.”

Madelyn Polk had two goals and an assist for St. Al, which will host Laurel Christian Thursday at 4 p.m. at Mlakar Field in Bovina.

St. Al and Indianola Academy will play again Sept. 30 in Bovina.
