It wasn’t until the bottom of the fifth inning where Vicksburg’s softball team took control of a game they were, on paper, supposed to win, beating Greenville 11-1.

“The tempo was not really good in the first part,” said assistant coach Brian Ellis. “We weren’t hitting the ball well. Went through 10 hitters and had three hits at that point. Shelby (Muirhead) hit a double in the 1st inning but we didn’t score.”

The Missy Gators won through the “run rule,” if a team is up by 10 after five innings the game is called. They are now 1-1 in district play and face Warren Central Wednesday, which Ellis called a big game.

In the fifth, the Missy Gators loaded the bases three different times and four players were walked intentionally; Muirhead, Kelsey Lockridge, Jada Sims and Ashley Jones.

After Muirhead was walked the first time, Olivia Oakes hit a double, followed by Kelsey Lockridge being walked loading the bases for the first time. Kayla Foster came behind her hitting two RBIs and a base hit. Sims was walked loading the bases for the second time in the inning.

Markyla Chiles hit a double clearing the bases, but on a throw to home base got to third. Jones and Mya’h Wright were walked loading up the bases for a second time. Jasmin Green got a base hit up the middle to the wall to win the game.

Ellis said it helped the Missy Gators were walked four times and Chiles hit was huge.

“She has been hitting the ball real well. She campe up with a pretty clutch situation and got a base hit,” Ellis said.

In the second inning, the Missy Gators didn’t allow a player to get past second base for the rest of the game. They had one error, which was a drop fly by Green, everything else was fly or ground balls.

Wright was 2-3 Thursday with an intentional walk and Jones was 2-2 with an intentional walk.

Muirhead was 1-1 and was walked twice, after her first hit off the wall. The second time she was walked Oates hit the line drive double.

“It was kind of one of those game were we didn’t hit the ball in the beginning. Kelsey hit a homerun at her first at bat. We played pretty good defense the whole time. I think everyone had at least one hit,” Ellis said.

 

Warren Central dominates Clinton

Sarah Kate Smith and Brooke Patterson both hit out of the park homers against Clinton Thursday. Smith’s came in the third inning for two RBIs and Patterson’s scored hers in the 4th for three RBIs.

The Lady Vikes scored three runs in the first, two in the third, and four in the last two innings. The game was called by the run-rule beating Clinton 14-2.

“Everybody up and down the line hit the ball well. All 10 starters have at least 1 hit,” said Warren Central coach Dana McGiveny.

Cortezie scored three times, leading the team in runs. Brooke Patterson had four RBIs, Smith had two RBIs and Katelyn Morson scored two runs. Clinton scored twice in the second inning. Clinton had seven hits to Warren Centrals’ 14.

“Maybe we had a couple of errors. Other than that our defense was outstanding tonight. We made several diving plays and Megan (Stewart) was throwing strikes all night, she didn’t walk any batters tonight, which is all we can ask,” McGiveny said.

The Lady Vikes take on Vicksburg High on Wednesday.

“Im very pround of our girls and how they played. I’m excited to see what the rest of the season has to hold,” McGiveny said.
