Madison Parish making history

For the first decade of its existence, Madison Parish averaged two wins per football season. The Jaguars have already matched that in 2015, and seem like they could be on their way to the first winning season in school history.
Madison beat Montgomery 38-0 last week for its first 2-0 start since its inaugural season in 2005. It’ll try to make it to 3-0 for the first time when it heads to south Louisiana to play winless Opelousas (0-3) tonight. Madison’s 4-7 record in 2014 was its best ever. It won one game in 2012, when its current seniors were freshmen, and coach Levi Washington said seeing their hard work and perseverance pay off has been a treat.
“It’s rewarding,” Madison coach Levi Washington said of his team’s success. “When these kids got here they only won one game. They’ve been getting better and better every year.”
Port Gibson at McComb
Port Gibson (1-3) will go on the road to play McComb (3-1), which has had a lot of success against bigger opponents this season. The Tigers, a Class 4A team, already own victories over Class 6A Harrison Central and Class 5A Brookhaven.
Class 3A Port Gibson, meanwhile, will be playing a bigger opponent for the fourth consecutive week. It snapped a 16-game losing streak by beating Class 5A Lanier, but was shut out 37-0 last week by Class 6A Terry.
SIA at North Sunflower
After having its 29-game winning streak snapped two weeks ago, MAIS eight-man power Sharkey-Issaquena Academy (3-1) has averaged 277 rushing yards per game in back-to-back wins. SIA has averaged 320 rushing yards in its three victories.
Tallulah at Humphreys
Undefeated Tallulah Academy (3-0) will play its second consecutive District 4-A game when it goes on the road to Humphreys Academy (1-3).
The matchup might provide a breather for Tallulah before a difficult upcoming stretch. Two of its next three games are against undefeated Christian Collegiate (4-0) and two-time defending state champion Sharkey-Issaquena (3-1).
Franklin at Rebul
After several down years, Rebul Academy has gotten off to a 3-1 start that’s its best since switching to the MAIS’ eight-man division in 2007. The Raiders won four games last year, and one total from 2011-13. They haven’t finished above .500 since going to eight-man, but have the second-best record in District 3-A and only one of its last seven games is against a team with a winning record. Tonight’s opponent, Franklin Academy, is 2-2.
Central Hinds at WCCA
Central Hinds missed a chance last week to poach some more power points when its game against River Oaks was canceled because of inclement weather. The Cougars (3-0) will now head south to Wilkinson County Christian (2-2) for one last “easy” game before hitting a difficult back half of the schedule. After tonight, Central Hinds plays four district opponents and perennial power Simpson Academy (4-0) in its last five games.
