For 33 years, the Old Court House Flea Market has ushered the start of spring and fall each year.
The fall flea market will be Saturday, Oct. 3, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Old Court House, located at 1008 Cherry St.
“We’ve always found that first weekend in October the weather’s normally good, a nice crisp morning. It brings out a lot of people in Vicksburg to visit,” said George “Bubba” Bolm, curator and director at the Old Court House Museum.
An estimated about 150 arts and crafts vendors will sell mostly custom, handmade products at the market. Even though the market is seen as a community event, Bolm said vendors come from all over Mississippi and other southern states like Louisiana and Texas. Some of the items being offered include flower seeds, furniture, honey, jewelry, scarfs, wreaths, toys, knives, antiques and collectibles to name a few.
“We allow almost everything except for rummage,” Bolm said.
Classic fall fair style foods will be offered like funnel cakes, popcorn, shaved ice, hamburgers, hot dogs and BBQ chicken.
Many of the food options will be made locally and benefit local organizations.
Schools and the Boy Scouts are other organizations that will be present and have their own booths set up to raise money.
With it being an election year, candidates will also have booths at the market to campaign and share their message.
The booths will be set up on the Old Court House grounds mostly around Cherry, Jackson and Monroe streets.
The flea market is free to the public to enter, but the museum makes money from the event by renting 10×10 lots on the museum grounds to vendors for $60.
“There’s plenty of vendor spots available. We have probably 300 spots that we can fill up. A full city block is a lot if you look at it in 10 foot segments,” Bolm said.
All 18 spots for food vendors have been reserved.
The Old Court House started the fundraiser 33 years ago to help with the upkeep of the museum.
“The museum doesn’t seek benefits from state and federal funding,” Bolm said. “We do it ourselves.”
The museum will be open during the flea market.
The spring flea market will be held in April.
