For more than four decades, The Attic Gallery has been a mainstay on Washington Street. It first opened its doors in 1971, and to commemorate the gallery’s 44 years, an art show has been scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.

“We will celebrate the best way we know, by having new art for people to see created by some of our favorite artists,” Attic Gallery owner Lesley Silver said.

The show will be held on the third floor of the Attic Gallery at 1101 Washington St., which is home to Silver and her husband, Daniel Boone.

“We love art and artists, and I believe everyone should live with original art in their homes. My joy in having the Attic is bringing them together,” said Silver who was presented the Governor’s Award for the Arts in 2014 for her efforts on promoting arts in the community.

“When we turned our top floor into a home, it was always our plan to have special events here in our living room,” she said. “We look forward to it, and I think people enjoy gathering here.”

The theme for this year’s show is the number 44.

Silver said she likes to choose a theme for the art shows she hosts at the gallery in order to give the artists a starting point. They are then free to choose how they want to interpret the theme, she said.

“For our anniversary shows we often pick something to do with time. It seems appropriate as the years go by,” she said, adding that the number 44 will be broken down into fours.

“We decided to break it down into its fours. We thought of how powerful a number four is — four directions, four winds, four elements, four seasons, four suits of cards.”

All of the artists participating in the anniversary show are Mississippi artists, including Jean Blue, Lucy Hunnicut, Pat Brown, Rick Anderson, Lane Berg, Ellen Langford, Anne Campbell, Rhonda Blasingame and Vidal Blankenstein.

“The work is coming in, and it is strong. There are paintings, collages, fabric pieces, assemblages and more, reflecting the variety that can be found here,” Silver said.
