PCA out to end its frustration

So far the only luck Porters Chapel has received was a forfeit win from Riverside early in the season. Since then, the Eagles have dropped every game, making them more and more frustrated as the season has progressed.
Friday night they’ll get another chance to come out victorious as they host Wilkinson County Christian Academy in a District 5-AA matchup. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
“We’re ready to play and been working real hard this week,” PCA coach Wayne Lynch said. “We’re not changing anything just perfecting. We’ve got some good kids and some excited kids who haven’t played much and we’ll see what we got.”
Offensively, the Eagles’ game plan is to get the ball out quick to their running backs and receivers. On the other side of the ball, they will have to stop the Rams’ running game.
Lynch said the team knows the Rams (5-2, 0-0 District 5-AA) have a good front seven and, while they’re not necessarily going to pound the ball, the Eagles should be fine if they’re able to make people miss on tackles.
This week in practice PCA has worked on cleaning up fundamental techniques like footwork and tackling.
“We’ve been playing hard and just have to get better on the technical side of things. We’ve got to tackle better and things like that,” Lynch said.
The Rams smoked River Oaks last week, 35-7, for their fifth win of the season and third in a row.
“They’re a good team. Their offensive line is pretty big and strong. As far as speed we match up well with speed,” Lynch said. “As far as sideline to sideline we match up well. We just have to make sure we get in their face, play hard and play well.”
Aside from the Eagles (1-6, 0-1) having the forfeited win on their record, they still have a chance for a MAIS playoff appearance — if they can win a few games down the stretch. There’s three left, including two at home against WCCA and Oct. 23 against Amite School Center.
The constant losing this season has been tough on a team who plays hard every week, but Lynch said they’ve remained positive and haven’t given up. They understand the struggles and understand that with two district games left among its final three that things can change.
In order for their playoff dreams to come to fruition, Lynch said the team has to stop turning the ball over and giving up big plays on defense.
PCA has worked on running an efficient offensive scheme and Lynch feels they’ve gotten better as the season progressed.
“Our offensive line, which is all young, is learning how to operate in the offense,” Lynch said. “It’s just a matter of executing the quarterback and receivers, running the ball enough to keep the defense honest, and trying to move the ball. We’ve been able to get first downs, but we’ve got to stick with the game plan and keep pushing it all game.”
