The St. Aloysius girls basketball team had no trouble whatsoever in their first game as a member of the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools.
Grace Upshaw scored 22 points, Brooklyn Breithaupt added 12, and the Lady Flashes dismantled River Oaks 56-7 Monday night in their season opener at the Tallulah Academy tournament.
Olivia Curtis had eight points and nine rebounds for St. Al, and Michelle Howington had six points and eight rebounds.
St. Al jumped out to a 19-point lead at the end of the first quarter, then shut out River Oaks in the second and third. It took a 38-5 lead into halftime and substituted liberally in the second half.
“I was looking at small things,” St. Al coach Delvin Thompson said. “After the first quarter I realized it was out of hand, so I looked at fundamentals. If we’re not fundamentally sound it’ll catch up to us, and we were fundamentally sound for the most part.”
St. Al will play host Tallulah Academy in the tournament championship game tonight at 7:15.
