Missy Gators rally to win basketball opener

Keiyana Gaskin heated up at just the right time, and the Vicksburg Missy Gators started the 2015-16 basketball season in the win column.

Gaskin scored nine of her 13 points in the fourth quarter, and Maya Clay added eight points and 12 rebounds as Vicksburg beat Germantown 50-45 Saturday night.

Clay scored four of her eight points in the final period as the Missy Gators outscored Germantown 29-17 in the second half and rallied from a seven-point deficit at halftime.

Karry Callahan finished with 10 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals for Vicksburg, and Pleasure King scored eight points. Aneshia Evans hit four 3-pointers and led Germantown with 21 points.

Vicksburg will play South Pike in its home opener Tuesday at 5 p.m.

(B) Vicksburg 66, Germantown 37

Kirk Parker scored 18 points, while Joe Thomas and Dentarius Richardson added 10 apiece for Vicksburg as it rolled over Germantown. The Gators won their season opener for the eighth time in nine years.

(G) Warren Central 54, Jefferson County 52

Te’Asia Sims scored 16 points, Dee Dee Caldwell had 15, and Warren Central avoided a late charge by Jefferson County to win its season opener.

Warren Central led by six with 20 seconds left, but Jefferson County used a turnover and two missed throws by the Lady Vikes to score a pair of baskets. WC finally was able to inbound the ball cleanly with one second left, and time ran out.

Sims had five assists for Warren Central, while Amber Gaston had five blocks and five rebounds.

Warren Central will go on the road to play at South Delta Tuesday at 6 p.m.

(B) Warren Central 63, Jefferson County 57

Chavis Smith hit four of Warren Central’s eight 3-pointers to lead the Vikings to a season-opening win over Jefferson County.

Smith finished with a game-high 18 points, JaQuan Woods scored 15 and Kevin Virges had nine.
