Around the time the clock struck midnight, Sharkey-Issaquena Academy’s two-year reign as MAIS eight-man football champion came to an end.
Kemper Academy held SIA to 181 yards of total offense and beat the Confederates 28-16 Friday night in a first-round playoff game. Weather delayed the game for more than two hours, and it didn’t conclude until almost midnight.
SIA quarterback Austin Herraney threw two touchdown passes to Cole Delaney and finished 8-of-13 passing for 136 yards. SIA, however, only ran for 45 yards as a team.
The Confederates (8-4) lost a playoff game for the first time since 2012. They went undefeated in both 2013 and 2014 en route to the state title each time.
Hunter Cumberland ran for 223 yards and a touchdown for Kemper (11-0), which advanced to play Christian Collegiate in the semifinals.
