Deer season open Saturday

Mississippi’s white-tailed deer gun hunting season opens Saturday and continues until Dec. 1. Hunting with dogs is legal during this season. All persons born on or after January 1, 1972, are required to complete a hunter education course before purchasing a Mississippi hunting license. Each resident of Mississippi age 16 through 64 must obtain a hunting license, except while hunting on lands titled in his/her name.

Adult basketball league

Registration for the City of Vicksburg’s adult men’s and women’s basketball league will continue through Dec. 28. Registration packets can be picked up at the Jackson Street Community Center or the Parks and Recreation offices at 100 Army-Navy Drive. Games will begin Jan. 11.

The registration fee is $125 per team, plus a $10 fee for non-city residents. Team fees will not exceed $175. There will be a mandatory coaches meeting Dec. 30 at 6:30 p.m. at the Parks and Recreation office. For more information, call parks and recreation director Joseph Graves at 601-634-4514.

Triumph Ministries will host the inaugural River City Showcase basketball tournament April 9, 2016 at Vicksburg High School. The event will feature senior players from more than 20 area high schools. For more information, visit TMIVicksburg.weebly.com.

Fall tennis program

The City of Vicksburg’s youth fall tennis program is under way at the Halls Ferry Park courts. The program will run Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, from 5 to 6 p.m., and is free. For more information, call the City of Vicksburg’s tennis program director Rick Shields at 601-618-4757.

Cheerleader camp at EMCC

East Mississippi Community College will host a cheerleading mini-camp for all school-aged children Dec. 7-8 at Currie Coliseum on its campus in Scooba. The camp is open to boys and girls ages 5-18, and the registration fee is $30. Campers will learn cheers, stunts and jumps from the EMCC cheerleaders on Dec. 7, then on Dec. 8 will participate in a halftime performance at East Mississippi’s men’s basketball game against William Carey.

AJGT golf tournament

The Arrowhead Junior Golf Tour is accepting registration for The Bluffs Junior Classic, scheduled for Dec. 5 and 6 at The Bluffs Country Club in St. Francisville, La. The entry fee for the two-day, 36-hole tournament is $185 and includes green fees, tee gifts and trophies in four age divisions. The registration deadline is Dec. 3.
