Shop small Saturday at Holly Days

Looking to buy Christmas presents locally? Even though Small Business Saturday is over, Vicksburg is giving the public a different opportunity to shop local.

The Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation is hosting the eighth annual Holly Days Arts and Crafts Show from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Saturday at the Southern Cultural Heritage Center’s auditorium, 1302 Adams St.

“This is a way for us to showcase quality vendors from this area,” Stacey Massey, executive director of the SCHF, said. “Most of them are from Vicksburg, some are in the Mississippi area. It’s a way to showcase their arts and crafts, which is part of what we do and what we like to support. It gives them a place to show their crafts and people a place to shop, and at the same time we’ve got the live entertainment so that the people that are attending the function are entertained.”

Twenty-seven local vendors will fill the auditorium with their arts and crafts on display for the public to purchase.

“We have a lot of new vendors this year so I’m real excited about that,” Massey said. “We’ll have a new group. Some vendors are returning from past years and then we have a good many new ones this year.”

An array of items will be available including home and garden items, candles, ornaments, jewelry, clothing, food, pottery, toys and art.

“It’s a great place to pick up gifts,” Massey said adding there will be a nice variety of goods to stop.

SCH will have their own booth with the Vicksburg Foundation for Historic Preservation where they will sell baked goods, hot chocolate and hot apple cider.

In addition to shopping, there will be live entertainment to keep the crowd in the holiday spirit with Christmas music being played in between performances. Performers will include Riverpointe Dance students, Jeanne Evans music students, The Mississippi Girlchoir, Debra Franco Preparatory School of Dance, Dance from the Heart- Jacob’s Ladder students, Judy Buys music students, Vicksburg Dance Studio and Church of the Holy Trinity, Conservatory of the Fine Arts Student Orchestra.

“It just puts you in the Christmas spirit,” Massey said.

Admission is $1 and goes toward funding the annual event. Goldie’s Express will also be on site selling barbecue lunches. There will be a seating area for those who want to watch the entertainment and an eating area for those who buy lunch.

Massey said every year they coordinate the event with the Downtown Vicksburg Christmas Parade of Lights, which will begin at 5 p.m. Saturday.

“We have this from 9a.m. until 3 p.m. and then people have a little time to get from here to go downtown and watch the parade,” Massey said.

For people looking for something to do during the two hours of down time, the shops downtown would probably love to have visitors patronize their businesses for holiday gifts.

“It’s usually a big day of fun for everybody,” Massey said.
