FLOWOOD — A reunion with an old friend lifted Warren Central’s spirits, but not its fortunes on the soccer field.
Eighth-grader Molly Ford had a goal and an assist Thursday night to lead Northwest Rankin to a 3-0 victory over Warren Central. It was the second straight loss for the Lady Vikes (2-3-1), who fell to Richland on Tuesday.
Another Northwest Rankin eighth-grader, Sandison Gibbs, scored on a corner kick in the 12th minute and freshman Malika Verma scored in the 26th minute. Ford’s goal in the 70th minute sealed the deal.
“It is little mistakes that we’re making that is causing us to give up goals. We’re a good team, we compete against them, and give up a corner kick goal for the second game in a row. It’s just the little things,” Warren Central coach Jay Madison said. “We’re pleased. We’ve just got some more work to do.”
One of the bright spots for the Lady Vikes was a reunion with former coach Trey Banks, who is now an assistant at Northwest Rankin. Banks was WC’s head coach from 2010-13, and a number of his former players are still on the team. After the game, most of them stopped to chat with Banks or give him a hug.
This was the first time Banks had coached against the Lady Vikes since leaving the program. He’s also a graduate of Warren Central and spent a few years as an assistant with the boys’ program.
“Anybody that knows me knows it’s my alma mater, and the deep love I have for Warren Central. I root for them when they’re not playing us,” Banks said. “It was emotional, because I cared for the girls program when I left, and still have emotions for the players. Seeing the girls and getting to talk to them makes me feel good about seeing them grow up.”
