Coaches select four Vikings for all-state football

For a team without any superstars, Warren Central sure seemed to have a lot of guys opposing coaches took notice of.

Four Vikings — strong safety Byron Galvin, defensive tackle Caleb Watts, offensive guard Keenen Jones and kicker Nick Wright — were selected to the Class 6A All-State second team in voting by Mississippi’s high school football coaches.

The Vikings also had 13 players named to the All-Region 2-6A team. Wright was the Region 2-6A special teams player of the year.

“Any time you have guys that are selected to the All-State team it’s a big honor, and having four is the most we’ve had in a long time,” Warren Central coach Josh Morgan said. “That’s voted on by all the coaches in 6A, so that’s a big honor, especially with all the talent and all the good teams in the state. That says a lot about the amount of respect people have for our football program.”

Galvin and Watts were both two-year starters on Warren Central’s defense, and regulars for a third season.

Galvin had 61 total tackles, including nine for loss, and two interceptions. Late last week, he was selected to play in the Bernard Blackwell Mississippi All-Star Game as an injury replacement.

Watts, a senior defensive tackle, had 63 tackles and 10 sacks this season, along with 22 tackles for loss.

Morgan said he was amazed what the 5-foot-11, 210-pounder was able to do against opponents who often outweighed him by 70 or 80 pounds.

“He has one of the highest motors I’ve seen,” Morgan said. “He’s playing defensive tackle in Class 6A at 210 pounds and he brought it every single play. He was a very important piece for us the last two years.”

Jones, in some ways, was the epitome of Warren Central’s offense. A relatively anonymous lineman at right guard, he helped the Vikings generate 2,668 rushing yards and more than 4,000 yards of total offense.

Four players had at least 450 rushing yards, but none finished with more than 800. That balance, Morgan said, was a credit to Jones and his linemates.

“Keenen was our leader up front,” Morgan said. “He’s another guy that played very physical, which is what we like to hang our hat on.”

Wright, meanwhile, was a potent weapon on special teams.

He had 12 touchbacks on 73 kickoff attempts, went 50-for-52 on PAT attempts, and 7-for-9 on field goals. Among his field goals was a walk-off game-winner in a 45-42 win over Pearl.

Over the past two seasons Wright went 87-for-92 on PATs and 16-for-19 on field goals.

“When they voted on it, it was very quick,” Morgan said with a laugh. “He was just really special for us. Just a big-time weapon.”

Making the All-Region 2-6A first team from Warren Central were Wright, Watts, Jones and Galvin; long snapper Tyler Vroman; and wide receiver Larry Ferguson.

Making the second team were running back D.J. Knight; wide receiver Miraculous Powers; tight end Liam Hopson; defensive back Derrick Dixon; and linebackers Jeremy Lewis and Cedric Harris.

Starkville wide receiver A.J. Brown was the Region 2-6A MVP.

Clinton quarterback Cam Akers was the offensive player of the year, and Starkville’s Abdural Lee the defensive player of the year.
