Options available for recycling trees

Now that the holiday season is drawing to a close, some are looking to get rid of the tree that gave way to such holiday cheer.

In the city of Vicksburg and Warren County, there are two ways to dispose or recycle a used Christmas tree.

City landscaper Jeff Richardson said city residents could bring their trees to an empty lot just south of the old Mississippi Hardware building.

“We just ask that there not be any ornaments or stands,” Richardson said.

Once trees are brought to the empty lot, Richardson said fisherman generally pick them up to use in their fish habitat.

“They’ll put them in ponds and lakes and it serves as cover for younger fish to live in,” Richardson said.

While there might be residents who opt to burn trees, Richardson encouraged people to recycle them instead.

For residents in the county, Waste Management will pick up trees left on the curb.

“We’re going to start right after the holiday,” Larry King, lead driver at Waste Mangement said. “Normally folks like to leave them up until after the New Year. Then once they start putting them out after the New Year we’ll start picking them up.”

If the city gives Waste Management the okay, then it’ll do the same for customers in city limits.

Once the trees are collected, they are disposed with the regular waste picked up as well.

“After we get the truck loaded, we bring it back to our transfer station and offload it to 18-wheeler.”

King said the trees can fit easily in the compactor and doesn’t cause any problems for the truck.

“Most of your Christmas trees are real light beside you have one limb running through the middle,” King said. “But with our truck and design of our truck it’s easy to compact them with no problem.”

King has seen a consistent amount of real trees put out for disposal after the holiday season.

“A lot of folks like live trees but you can get a better one, an artificial one with lights already on it.

Loading the tree into the compactor is simple and doesn’t require much work, but King said a second worker is there just in case.

“It’s just a snatch and grab.”
