As the Christmas madness comes to a close, the holiday season makes way for a new year, bringing a focus to the New Year’s resolution. For some, it is a dedicated time to make a real difference or change within themselves or in their community, while others see it as a last-ditch chance to get back onto the horse of a routine or habit that they may have lost touch with over the course of the year.

Weight loss, community service, and keeping everything the same take the top spots on the lists of Vicksburg locals this year.

Sarah Miles said she is still working on her resolution from two years ago. “I’ve had the resolution to lose weight for about two years now, and I’m planning on sticking with that resolution through next year. I’ve lost 102 pounds so far, and I plan on losing more.”

“I plan to give back to my community and do more hours of service next year,” said Haylee Prescott, “This year isn’t my first year to have a resolution. Some years I do it, others I don’t. But I think I’ll stay on top of it this year, because this not only benefits me, it also helps others.”

Cecil Simmons Jr. also plans to lose weight this coming year.

“I’ve had several resolutions throughout the years,” he said. “Losing weight is one of them, and its what I plan to do this year. They usually last a couple of months,” he said.

“I plan to spend more time devoted to school and studying,” said Tori Thomas, a student at Mississippi State. “It’s my first year to do it, but I plan to follow through with it.”

Chelsea Tohtz says her resolution for the past two years has been to get healthy.

“I went to the gym for the first three months of last year, then quit going because it was crowded,” she said. ”For me, its better to start my resolution at the end of February.”

Others take a different approach to the New Years Resolution.

“My resolution is not to have one,” said Betty Bullard.

Jane Paris and her husband, John, share a similar sentiment, but with a little more meaning behind it.

“We have both tried the ‘resolution’ thing before, but we have either made unrealistic ones or we didn’t stick to them,” she said. “So now we just resolve to keep doing what we’re doing because we are quite happy! It’s a ‘no pressure resolution!”

Sharon Andrews says her resolution has always been the same. “My resolution is to be better at all aspects of my life than I was the year before.” When asked how long her resolution usually lasts, she said, “I start over every day. Every day is a new day.”
