State, county and city officials are continuing to close roads as water levels continue to rise due to the Mississippi River flood.

According to MDOT, Flooding is the top weather related killer.

“Most flood deaths occur at night when people become trapped in a stalled vehicle in a flooded area,” according to a release from MDOT.

The following safety measures should be adhered to in order to ensure safety on flooded roadways:

·      Avoid already flooded areas. A flowing stream can carry a vehicle downstream.

·      Never drive through a flooded area. Always remember to TURN AROUND, DON’T DROWN!

·      If you are driving at night, be especially cautious as it is harder to recognize flood conditions.

·      Never drive around a barricaded road.

·      If your vehicle stalls, abandon it immediately and seek higher ground. Rising water can engulf a vehicle and its occupants.

The following roads in Vicksburg and Warren County have been closed:

Ziegler Rd
Laney Camp Rd
Alexander Rd
Allen Station Rd
Old Twin Lake Rd
Thompson Lake Rd
Chickasaw Rd
Chickasaw Dr
Chickasaw Ln
Kings Point Rd
Old River Rd
Long Lake Rd
Williams St
Ford Rd
Jackson Ln
Hardin Rd
Hwy 465
Part of Levee St
Marys Alley
Eva Street
Brown Alley

Closing 465 means Eagle Lake, which is protected from flooding from the mainline levee along the Mississippi and the Yazoo backwater levee, will be isolated, and residents will have to take the section of Mississippi 465 that runs along the mainline levee north of the community to Sharkey County to get to U.S. 61 and then to Vicksburg.

People trying to get to Eagle Lake will take U.S. 61 North to Low Water Bridge Road, to Goose Lake Road and then to 465, which is the only public road on the levee, Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said.
