St. Aloysius loses in testy game against Riverfield

In a game where four technical fouls were called, referees stepped in between players on the court and on the bench, and an injury to a St. Aloysius post player, it’s fair to say the Flashes and Riverfield Academy have a rivalry with each other.

Joshua Brown scored 19 points in the 56-44 loss to Riverfield Academy.

Rett Verhine added 11 points and five rebounds and Josh Price grabbed seven boards.

Douglas Curry, who coached the game for the Flashes, said the last time the two schools met, the Raiders were able to get into the Flashes’ heads resulting in a not so good performance.

“We came out strong from the tip. We went into halftime up. Some times it’s going to be a physical game. Especially when you have two teams who although new to playing each other, they’ve created an informal rivalry early,” Curry said.

The Flashes took a 27-26 lead going to halftime after being tied at 24 with less than three minutes left. Riverfield embarked on a 9-4 run during the third quarter and gave up only nine points in the third.

While going for a rebound in the fourth quarter, Price’s ankle became tangled up and he immediately fell out of bounds in pain.

He was able to limp off the field with some assistance.

The St. Aloysius’ girls basketball team lost to Riverfield Academy 50-35 Thursday night after a 17 point – 12 of which came in the second half – four rebound effort from Grace Upshaw.

Riverfield went on to outscore the Lady Flashes 20-13 in the final 10 minutes of the game.

“We had a bunch of good possessions, but we just couldn’t finish. That was our problem all game,” Curry said. “It was close the majority of the game, up until midway through the fourth quarter.”

With 4:19 left in the game, Riverfield led 39-27, and commanded a 10-point lead to the final buzzer.

The Lady Flashes had 20 rebounds with 16 between Upshaw, Michelle Hovington, Olivia Curtis and Grace Burnett.

“We got a lot turnovers in the backcourt we just couldn’t capitalize on those turnovers. We missed layups; we missed foul shots,” Curry said.

“We got turnovers in the frontcourt. We played great defense and decent offense, but we just couldn’t finish at the end of the fourth quarter.”

Brooklyn Breithaupt finished the game with nine first-half points.

Curry said the Lady Flashes put in an all-around effort.

“Brooklyn came threw, definitely controlling the game, pushing the ball and controlling the offense.

“Grace Upshaw had a decent game for us too and Allie (Falls) come off the bench with great defense,” Curry said.

Erin Branch scored a team-high 24 points for Riverfield and did so scoring on the block and in the paint.

“They got it in to their post player a lot and she does what she does; turn around, hook shot and layup,” Curry said.
