Crown to Heels settles into new location just steps away from the last

Things are shaking up downtown with the move of a long-standing formal store and the opening of a new boutique.
Crown to Heels has moved a half a block south from its location of five years to 1403 Washington St. The formal dresses and ladies clothing store has the same owners and the same merchandise in a new location.
“We love downtown,” owner Lurline Simmons said. “This spot became available, and I just love the glass display windows.”
Simmons said the large glass display windows in the new location were what encouraged her to move locations. When customers from out of town drive down Washington Street, they can’t miss the store because the formals can be clearly seen from the road, Simmons said.
“Plus we’re still downtown so our in town customers can find us easily,” Simmons said.
The formals are now hung on a long rack and displayed by color. Simmons carries size 0 to 20 in the store but can order up to a size 30. There are larger dressing rooms and a smaller scale custom stage set up with a large mirror for girls to witness the full effect of their dress.
“The stage this time is not 4 feet in the air. It’s a smaller step up,” Simmons said.
Most of all, Simmons is enjoying changing out the clothing on the mannequins in the display windows.
“We changed out the window yesterday because we had Valentine’s in it,” Simmons said. “It gives me more creative leeway to come up with stuff.”
The store closed for two and a half weeks the day after Simmons had her daughter. She originally planned to reopen on Feb. 1 but moved up the date to mid-January to accommodate her customers who were asking for dresses for certain events.
“People were calling and texting, ‘When are you opening?’ so we went on and opened in two weeks,” Simmons said.
Crown to Heels is open Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Crown to Heels can also be found on social media and the website shopcrowntoheels.com.
McKenzie Su’s Boutique has now opened in Crown to Heels old location at 1310 Washington St. The store has been open for about a week and carries jewelry, clothes and some shoes for juniors, misses, plus size and some kids.
“From 2001 to 2011 I owned a formal wear store located here in town, and I sold it in 2011. Five years later I decided to open this,” owner Michelle Lowery Cole said.
She wanted to open the store for fun and so the building wouldn’t be vacant. Only 1,500 sq. ft. of the 2,800 sq. ft. store is being used with the rest of the space serving as storage. Cole did a little redecorating by taking down wallpaper, sanding and painting the walls white.
“That way it could be very bright in here and you can see all the clothes,” Cole said.
McKenzie Su’s is open from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays.
