Severe weather, tornadoes possible this afternoon

Vicksburg and Warren County are on the fringe area of some predicted inclement weather this afternoon and officials are advising people to stay vigilant.

National Weather Service meteorologist David Cox said there will be a low pressure system moving in this afternoon between 2 and 6 p.m.

“It’s going to be a development of storms from strong to severe and tornadoes definitely look possible today as the system moves through,” he said.

Cox said Vicksburg is on the fringe of where sever weather is expected to hit.

“For anyone in the Vicksburg area, now is the time to make preparations and have a plan in place in case you go under a watch or warning,” he said. “Have ways to get that information like a weather radio or the wireless emergency alerts you can get on smartphones.”

People should invest in a NOAA Weather Radio and set up alerts on their smart phones, Cox added.

There is potential the Vicksburg area could receive one to three inches of rain by the time the storms pass through.

“We’ve had some rain over the past day or so that could help there be a potential for some flooding,” he said. “Keep a close eye on that.”

Warren County Emergency Management Director John Elfer said the more sever weather looks like it will hit south and east of Warren County.

“I just want people to pay attention and make sure they have more than one way to have multiple ways to get warning,” he said. “Don’t get complacent. The risk is still there. Pay attention to what’s going on, monitor changing conditions and make sure you have a way to get alerts.”

Elfter said to be on the safe side, Vicksburg Warren School District suspended all after school activities.

St. Aloysius principal Dr. Buddy Strickland and Porters Chapel Academy headmaster Pam Wilbanks each confirmed after-school activities at their schools have also been suspended.

“If we have extremely bad weather at the time we’re going to dismiss school, we’ll hold those kids,” Strickland said. “It doesn’t look like it’s going to affect us at the time we let school out.”

The Alcorn State University’s Lorman and Vicksburg campuses will close at 2 p.m. today and will open for normal hours tomorrow.
