CLAIBORNE COUNTY — A female student allegedly stabbed a Port Gibson High School male student in the back with a pair of scissors this morning on a school bus.

The stabbing occurred as the result of a fight on the bus in the Jones Village/Hermanville area, Claiborne County Sheriff Frank Davis said.

The victim was initially taken to Claiborne County Hospital and was transferred to University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. He was reported to be in stable condition when leaving Claiborne County Hospital.

An additional student, the female’s brother, a Port Gibson Middle School male, was also stabbed.

“They were part of the attack on the one child,” Claiborne County School District Conservator Dr. Earl Watkins said. “The children who were involved in the attack were picked up by the mother. I did not see that child or any injury.”

When the parents of the alleged female assailant and the middle school male who was stabbed arrived to pick up their children, the father, George Smith Jr., brought with him a gun, Davis said.

“He was charged with exhibiting a weapon,” Davis said. “It was either a shotgun or a rifle.”

Smith’s bond has been set at $2,500. The female student is in custody at the Warren County Detention Center.

The middle school male was not taken to the emergency room, but did seek medical attention elsewhere, Watkins said.

“This was a fight on a bus involving a number of children,” he said. “Our investigation will have to include as many of the children on the bus as possible to give us as many details as we can get. The bus driver alerted his supervisors as soon as he was aware something was occurring,” he said.

Details about what the fight was about remain unknown, but Watkins said authorities are working to find answers.

“Hopefully we will get to the bottom of that after our investigation,” he said. “We’re cooperating with the sheriff’s department on this matter so that we can make sure we address this in the appropriate way.”
