Marjorie Milam Carter

Marjorie Milam Carter was born Oct. 20, 1916, in Jacoby, La.

She died at Merit Health River Region Health Center surrounded by family Feb. 29, 2016, just eight months shy of her 100th birthday.

Marjorie, the daughter of Ned W. and Leona Y. Milam, graduated from Innis High School and moved to Monroe, La., where she worked with the social welfare department as a stenographer. There she met her husband, Gordon Carter, who was employed by the Corps of Engineers. They moved to Vicksburg in 1947 where she has resided for nearly 70 years.

Marjorie was one of the eldest members of Crawford Street United Methodist Church. She served as a pink lady for the Vicksburg Hospital Auxiliary for over 30 years and enjoyed sewing, quilting and working the daily crossword puzzle.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John Gordon Carter; two sisters, Dorothy M. Gaar and Eloise M. Smith; and son-in-law, Bob Stevens.

Survivors include three daughters, Sue Stevens of Jupiter, Fla., Lynn (Johnny) Jacobs, of Monroe, and Kathryn (David) Laughlin of Starkville; and one son, Phil (Rhonda) Carter of Monroe.

Grandchildren are Charlotte Ward, Pam Jones, Terry Stevens, Gordon Stevens of Jupiter, Fla., Laura Bloomer and Brian Jacobs of Monroe, Renae Freeland and Amy Dailey of West Monroe, La., Jim Love of Baton Rouge, La., and Jason Love of Metairie, La.; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Saturday, March 5 at 10:30 a.m. at Frank J. Fisher Funeral Home with the Rev. Cary Stockett and the Rev. Geoffrey Joyner officiating. Burial will be at Greenlawn Gardens Cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday from 5 to 7 p.m., and Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until time of the service.

Pallbearers will be Hugh Green and her grandsons, Terry Stevens, Gordon Stevens, Brian Jacobs, Jim Love and Jason Love. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Paul W. Pierce III and the surviving members of the senior Sunday school class at Crawford St. UMC.

The family would like to acknowledge the employees of Heritage House Retirement Center for their friendship, support and care during her residence there.
