SEARCH GOES ON

Four days after escaping from the Warren County Jail, Rafael McCloud remains on the loose as law enforcement authorities continue to search and revisit areas of Vicksburg where they believe the fugitive may be hiding or where he has reportedly been seen.

“I was with my deputies all night,” Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said. “We have looked everywhere and we’re still doing double shifts. It’s possible he may have left town, but we’re going to keep looking here until we can get information verified that he is no longer here.”

McCloud, 34, who is awaiting trial for capital murder and other charges in the June 28 abduction and death of Sharen Wilson, escaped from the jail about 5:30 a.m. Wednesday after using a shank, or homemade knife, to assault and overpower one of the three guards on duty at the jail.

Since his escape, sheriff’s deputies have been assisted in their search by other local, state and federal law enforcement agencies.

“We’re getting a lot of help from a lot of other agencies, the Vicksburg Police Department, the U.S. Marshal Service, Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics and Wildlife, Fisheries and parks,” Pace said. “We are grateful for their assistance and cooperation, and we’re going to keep on searching. We will not rest until he (McCloud) is back in jail.”

The officers have also received help from the community.

Pace said Fox’s Pizza, the Red Cross and the Salvation Army have helped provide the officers with lunch at different areas in the city where searches have been underway.

Salvation Army Capt. Srikant Bhatnagar said McDonald’s, Ameristar and DiamondJacks casinos have provided lunches and snacks served by the Salvation Army for the officers involved in the search.

“This was unsolicited, and we have been very appreciative,” the sheriff said. “A lot of the officers helping us are from Jackson, so they’re not able to run someplace and get something to eat. This allows them to be able to get a meal and remain in the field.”

Since his escape, the search for McCloud has concentrated in the northern part of the city, where authorities said he was known to have lived and has friends and relatives.

Search teams multiple times revisited the Kuhn Memorial Hospital property, where McCloud is accused of killing Sharen Wilson, and where officers Thursday found a pair of pants he took from the jail guard.

Teams Friday searched all three buildings on the property floor-by-floor in an effort to find him. Thursday, they used a Mississippi High Patrol infrared-equipped helicopter to scan the building and other areas.

The Board of Mayor and Aldermen Friday approved an extra $5,000 reward in addition to the $2,500 reward offered by Central Mississippi Crimestoppers for information leading to McCloud’s capture, and Mayor George Flaggs Jr. and Pace each asked McCloud’s family to convince him to surrender to authorities.

McCloud, who had been in the Warren County Jail since his arrest June 29, was indicted in January on multiple counts involving Wilson’s death, and has prior felony convictions for auto burglary, grand larceny and armed robbery, according to court records.
