Severe weather is here to stay.

Thunderstorms rolled into Vicksburg Thursday morning dumping a lot of rain on the city in a short amount of time. The biggest threat to Vicksburg/Warren County at this time is flooding.

“We’ve got some reports of localized flooding on the roadways,” John Elfer, Warren County Emergency Management director, said.

The two major areas of flooding at this time are the westbound lanes of Interstate 20 near the weigh station and Paxton Road at Mississippi Old Highway 27.

“That’s the only two I’m aware of now,” Elfer said. “When we get more rain we’ll probably have some more.”

He said more rain is definite and with the ground already saturated with water there will likely be more flooding. The storms are predicted to last through Saturday. There have been reports of falling trees and down power lines.

“We’re going to keep an eye on it,” Elfer said.

In addition to rain, there is also the possibility of more severe thunderstorms Thursday night and Friday. Elfer said the tornado risk is low, but flash flooding and a few thunderstorms are probable.
