MSU, Ole Miss start weekend with wins

STARKVILLE — No. 21 Mississippi State kicked off a monster college baseball series with No. 10 Oregon on the right note Friday night.
Behind a three-hit night from Brent Rooker, a strong start from junior right-hander Dakota Hudson and a grand slam by Cody Brown, the Bulldogs knocked off the Ducks 10-4 on a wet night fat Dudy Noble Field.
Mississippi State improved to 10-3-1 overall and moved to 2-0 on a six-game homestand that will pave the way for the start of Southeastern Conference play next weekend at top-five Vanderbilt.
Hudson (2-1) pitched 5 2/3 innings. He allowed four hits and two runs, with five walks and nine strikeouts.
Oregon (8-3) built a 2-0 lead on A.J. Balta’s third home run of the season in the first inning, the first allowed by Hudson since his first career start in February 2014.
Rooker homered in the fifth inning to put the Bulldogs ahead 3-2. Brown’s grand slam was part of a five-run eighth inning that gave them some breathing room.
Ole Miss 15, Grambling 2
Head coach Mike Bianco earned his 700th career win and 600th victory at Ole Miss Friday night as the Rebels rolled over Grambling State.
Errol Robinson and Cameron Dishon both homered for Ole Miss (13-1), which won its eighth consecutive game. Robinson drove in three runs, Will Golsan walked three times and scored three runs, and Colby Bortles was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs.
Brady Bramlett (4-0) started and pitched five shutout innings for the Rebels. He struck out 11 batters, walked none, and gave up four hits.
Ole Miss scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning and scored in every inning in which it batted except the third and eighth. Ole Miss scored in the first inning for the eighth time in 14 games this season, and it has outscored opponents 25-6 in the opening frame.
Tray Bell had two hits for Grambling (4-7).
Ball State 7, LSU 1
Alex Call and Jarett Rindfleisch both homered, and Ball State (8-7) snapped LSU’s six-game winning streak by winning the opener of a three-game series Friday night in Baton Rouge.
Rindfleisch led off the second inning with a solo homer, added another solo shot in the sixth, and finished the game 3-for-4.
Call hit a two-run shot in the third inning and was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Sean Kennedy also hit a solo home run for the Cardinals, who never trailed in the game.
LSU sophomore ace Jared Poche’ was roughed up, allowing five runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings.
