Vicksburg has a storied tradition with pageants, and it’s even home to the annual Miss Mississippi’s Outstanding Teen and Miss Mississippi pageants.
Now, Vicksburg can add another check to its list of pageant excellence.
Warren Central High School graduate Lisa Ann Redd is Ms. Wheelchair Mississippi 2016.
According the Ms. Wheelchair America, its mission is to provide an opportunity of achievement for women who happen to be wheelchair users to successfully educate and advocate for the more than 54 million Americans living with disabilities.
The competition is based on advocacy, achievement, communication and presentation to select the most accomplished and articulate spokeswoman for persons with disabilities.
To win, Redd had to be able to communicate both the needs and the accomplishments of her constituency to the general public, the business community and the legislature.
If Redd goes on to win at the national stage, she will have numerous duties.
“These include promoting awareness of the need to eliminate architectural and attitudinal barriers, informing the able-bodied public of the achievements of the millions of people with disabilities across the nation, and assisting with the establishment of programs in all 50 states by promoting Ms. Wheelchair America,” according to the organization’s website.
“During her year-long reign, she will have the opportunity to travel visiting advocacy groups, making public appearances and conducting radio, print ad, and TV interviews. The commitment and personal example of the titleholder serves to further the mission of Ms. Wheelchair America.”
We think this would be an excellent opportunity for Redd, and exemplifies many of the best aspects of pageants.
We always love to see a individuals from our hometown succeed, and Redd is just another example of the great things coming from Vicksburg.
Everyone should be sure to keep up with the national competition in Grand Rapids, Mich., and wish Redd good luck.
