New mall eatery serves out quick American fare

A small, unassuming food stand in the Vicksburg Mall claims to be serving up some of the best in town.
Rocko’s Sandwich Shop owner and operator Demetric Brooks said they have a little bit of everything, but the top sellers are the bacon burger and hot wings.
“This is a quick service restaurant,” he said. “We serve wings, burgers, fries, salads, sandwiches, and we also cater.”
Brooks, who worked 26 years in the food service industry, said he hopes to put that experience to use while giving Vicksburg a new dining option.
Brooks chose the name of his restaurant to honor a friend who passed away.
“A friend of mine, Clarence Shelby, died about five years back,” he said. “We called him Rock. That was his nickname in high school.”
Brooks took the nickname a step further, calling his eventual restaurant after his friend, Rocko.
Since opening about three weeks ago, Rocko’s has had steady traffic, Brooks said.
“The hospitality and the service is reason enough to come,” he said. “We also need to support businesses that open up here in Vicksburg.”
Supporting local businesses helps the local economy, Brooks added.
“Since I’ve been open I’ve had some employment — I’ve employed four kids out of high school,” he said. “We’re creating jobs.”
The restaurant has the same hours as the rest of the mall: weekdays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and weekends from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
