PEARL — Southern Miss suffered a loss off the field Tuesday, as well as one on it.
Ryan Olenek went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, J.B. Woodman had two hits and scored twice, and Ole Miss beat Southern Miss 6-2 at Trustmark Park.
Ole Miss scored all four of its runs in the first four innings. Olenek had a two-run single in the second inning, and Woodman scored in both the first and second innings. Connor Cloyd drove in two runs in the third with another single.
The Rebels (22-7) scored five of their six runs with two outs.
“I thought the two-out hits were huge, but also I thought tonight we played with a lot of confidence and played aggressive early,” Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco said. “We talk a lot about keeping that chain together being aggressive and confident and some guys had a big night because of that.”
Before the game, Southern Miss learned that sophomore third baseman Taylor Braley will miss an undisclosed amount of time with a knee injury. Braley had knee surgery earlier Tuesday to repair a torn meniscus. Braley was injured fielding a ball Saturday against Charlotte.
Braley is hitting .323 with 10 home runs and 31 RBIs. He’s the first Southern Miss player since 2013 to reach double digits in home runs.
“This is certainly news that you do not want to hear during the middle of your season, or any time really, but we are very disappointed in this news for Taylor,” Southern Miss coach Scott Berry said. “He was having a tremendous year for us, but we will adjust and move forward as the season goes on. We know that he will work extremely hard to get back on the field as soon as possible.”
Even without Braley in the lineup, Southern Miss (22-8) had opportunities Tuesday. It had eight hits, including doubles by Dylan Burdeaux and Tim Lynch, but left eight runners on base.
Ole Miss starter James McArthur (4-0) pitched six innings of shutout ball. He struck out five while allowing four hits and two walks. Five relievers combined to allow two runs, only one earned, over the last three innings.

Mississippi State (21-8-1) used eight pitchers and a couple of big innings to cruise to an easy win over Tennessee-Martin (7-22).
The Bulldogs’ pitching staff combined on a four-hit shutout and walked four batters while striking out eight. Reliever Ryan Cyr (1-0), the second pitcher of the game, worked two innings for the win.
Offensively, the Bulldogs scored four runs in the second inning and seven in the fifth to blow the game open.
Jack Kruger went 3-for-6 with a home run and four RBIs for Mississippi State, while Jake Mangum was 4-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Brent Rooker and Hunter Stovall drove in two runs apiece.
