Beating No. 1 helped Mississippi State get to No. 2.
The Bulldogs moved up three spots to No. 2 in the Baseball America Top 25 poll released Monday, following their first series win at then-No. 1 Florida since 2007.
Mississippi State (23-9-1, 8-4 Southeastern Conference) has won each of its first four conference series for the first time since 2001, and is in sole possession of first place in the SEC West.
It’s the highest ranking for the program since it was also ranked No. 2 at the end of the 2013 season.
Sophomore outfielder Brent Rooker said success has made this season thoroughly enjoyable.
“I’ve never been around a team who has this much fun playing baseball and being together. When you have 35 guys who are genuinely egoless and who don’t care about themselves and only care about the success of the team, that’s what it’s going to be like in the dugout,” Rooker said at a press conference Monday in Starkville. “It just makes it a special environment, and it’s the most unbelievable team I’ve ever been a part of.”
Miami (25-4) moved up one spot to No. 1 in the Baseball America poll. No. 3 Florida (29-5), Texas A&M (25-7) and South Carolina (28-5) rounded out the top five.
Ole Miss (25-7) checked in at No. 8 following its sweep of Arkansas, and LSU was at No. 9 to give the SEC six of the top nine teams in the country. No. 12 Vanderbilt and No. 16 Kentucky also joined their SEC brethren in the top 25.
Southern Miss (25-8) broke into the poll at No. 25.
In the other major college baseball poll, the Collegiate Baseball poll, Mississippi State is ranked fifth after coming in at No. 8 last week.
Miami was also No. 1 in the Collegiate Baseball poll, while South Carolina was No. 2, Florida No. 3, and Florida State No. 4.
Ole Miss was ranked 15th and Southern Miss 18th. The Rebels and Golden Eagles play each other Wednesday night in Oxford.
Mississippi State will host Memphis on Wednesday, and then a three-game series with Texas A&M beginning Friday night.
Also on Monday, Mississippi State center fielder Jake Mangum was named the SEC’s Freshman of the Week.
Mangum went 10-for-18 in four games against Florida and Tennessee-Martin, and leads the SEC with a .437 batting average. Mangum has reached base safely in 10 consecutive games.
