Two music artists from one family are going to share a stage for the first time Friday night.
Lee H. Abraham of The Chill and his nephew Eric Hamilton of Sheriff Reno Hamilton are going to perform a couple songs with each other’s band Friday night at RiverFest. The Chill is scheduled to perform on the north stage at 6:15 p.m. Friday and Sheriff Reno Hamilton will follow at 7:30 p.m.
“He and I have never been on the stage together,” Abraham said. “This is a real personal historical treat for me and him.”
Both men serve as their band’s lead singers.
“We actually look a whole lot alike,” Hamilton said. “Kind of twins 15 years apart.”
Abraham said The Chill has performed at RiverFest every year, but this will be Sheriff Reno Hamilton’s first time at RiverFest.
Hamilton said this is the first time in two years he has visited Mississippi, and it is his first time performing in Mississippi in 10 years.
“I am just so excited to come home and see familiar faces, and to see that river, and to be apart of Mississippi culture,” Hamilton said. “My home is in Nashville, but my heart will always be in the state of Mississippi.”
Hamilton was born in Vicksburg, raised in Port Gibson and has lived in Nashville since the 1980s pursuing his dream. In addition to his band, he is also a songwriter who has written for and with Edwin McCain, Johnny Cash and Chris Kristopherson.
While Hamilton is writing for others, he often performs songs written by Abraham.
“I never write for anybody else,” Abraham said. “He just liked my material.”
Abraham said he has written over 100 songs, and Hamilton said he has written 1,000 songs.
Hamilton has been inspired greatly by his uncle and the two are pretty close.
“He was such a huge influence on my life and my music,” Hamilton said. “He’s a brilliant guy and humble.”
Abraham said he probably taught Hamilton his first guitar cord.
“He’s way past me,” Abraham said. “He’s a great talent. I’m real proud of him.”
Sheriff Reno Hamilton plays rock and roll in traditional bluegrass arrangements. “People don’t know what to think when they hear us because it’s so different from anything they’ve ever heard,” Hamilton said.
The band is made up of Don Wayne and Dale Reno, whose father wrote Dueling Banjos, and Sweepy Walker, whose grandfather Billy was a 45-year veteran of the Grand Ole Opry.
“I think that my act is going to be something different that really the state of Mississippi has never seen,” Hamilton said.
He said the group has customized their set for the Mississippi crowd.
The Chill mostly performs covers of Van Morrison and Motown music, but Abram likes to write his own music when he is inspired. Sometimes he performs those songs with Kenny Boone and Daniel Boone. The group will play Sunday at the Strand Theatre.
