VHS track teams shine at division meet

CANTON — Vicksburg High’s Leon Miles began his quest for another sweep of the MHSAA Class 5A boys hurdles championships on Monday by finishing first in both the 110 and 300 meter hurdles at the Division 4-5A meet at Canton High School.

Miles was one of nine Gators or Missy Gators to win their events in the first round of qualifying for next month’s state meet. A total of 26 VHS athletes and six relay teams advanced to the regional meet, which will be held Thursday at Germantown High School.

In the girls’ meet, Tymesha Nabors won the 100 and 300 meter hurdles for Vicksburg, Keiyana Gaskin won the 100 meters, Jade Douglas the 800 meters and Brashayla Thomas the high jump. The 4×100, 4×200 and 4×400 meter relays were also victorious.

In the boys’ meet, Greg Lewis won the 100 meter dash, Otis Johnson the 800 meters, Kemontez White the 400 meters, and Tyler McDowell the long jump and triple jump. The 4×100 and 4×200 meter relay teams also won.
