A bad weekend turned into a bonafide slump for Southern Miss.

The Golden Eagles only had two hits — both singles by Tim Lynch — and were shut out by Tulane, 12-0 Tuesday night in New Orleans.

Southern Miss (27-11) lost for the third time in four games, and for the second time this season to Tulane (23-13). USM is now 4-6 in midweek games this season.

Hunter Williams had a three-run double in the first inning and Hunter Hope belted a two-run home run in the second to help Tulane jump out to a 6-0 lead.

“The biggest thing about the first inning is how patient we were. We were very disciplined at home plate, and that was the key,” Tulane coach David Pierce said.

J.P. France (3-1) and three relievers combined on Tulane’s ninth shutout of the season. France started and went six innings. He allowed one hit and four walks, and struck out seven.

Tulane’s pitching staff walked seven batters total and tied a school record with its ninth shutout of the season.

“(France) had something on the ball tonight. I don’t know what his velocities were, but at times he threw a plus slider and a plus changeup. At times, he’s outstanding,” Pierce said.

Seven USM pitchers surrendered a dozen walks and 10 hits. Starter Stevie Powers (0-1) walked four batters and gave up three hits and six runs in 1 2/3 innings. He was charged with the loss.

Williams finished 2-for-5 with two doubles, four RBIs and two runs scored for Tulane.

Lex Kaplan scored three runs, and Stephen Alemais was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

 

Ole Miss 7, Memphis 0

Will Golsan and Michael Fitzsimmons hit back-to-back homers as part of a four-run sixth inning, Colby Bortles added a solo shot in the eighth, and Ole Miss (27-10) routed Memphis (13-24).

James McArthur (5-0) pitched seven shutout innings for the Rebels. He walked two batters and gave up four hits while striking out seven. He also retired eight of the last 11 batters he faced in the longest outing of his college career.

Brady Feigl worked the last two innings to finish the shutout.

Bortles was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, Golsan drove in two runs and scored two more, and Errol Robinson and J.B. Woodman had two hits apiece for Ole Miss.

Ole Miss will host Murray State in another midweek game Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Swayze Field in Oxford.
