The Center for Pregnancy Choices is inviting the community to walk through downtown Saturday to support the center and further the cause of aiding and educating families.
“We want the entire community to know that we’re here,” executive director Priscilla Black said.
The annual one-mile Walk for Life is scheduled to start at 10:30 a.m. Saturday with registration beginning at 10 a.m. The center has hosted the walk for years.
“It’s become smaller and smaller and we’re looking to increase so that it’s a family friendly event where annually people look forward to coming,” Black said.
Registration is $20 to walk, or people who garner $100 worth of donations can walk for free. Businesses or any group can put together teams of up to 15 for a $100 entry fee.
“We know fundraising is not for everyone,” Black said. “Everybody has different gifts.”
The walk will start near the corner of Crawford and Adams streets and continue west on Crawford before turning south on Walnut Street for two blocks. Then it goes one block west on Veto Street and turns south for one block on Washington Street before going two blocks east on South Madison Street and then north on Monroe Street until returning back to Crawford Street.
“You can take it at whatever leisurely pace you want,” Black said.
Some walkers are asking people to sponsor them monetarily for the mile they walk in an effort to raise more money for the center. “That’s really encouraging for us to watch the community rally around us in our efforts, and for them to take some of the burden of funding onto themselves is such a blessing for us,” Black said. After the walk there will be a family friendly cookout with an inflatable obstacle course, bounce house and kid zone. Awards and prizes will be given to people and teams who have raised the most money. The walk is the main fundraiser for the center every year and it helps the staff be able to provide free care to families inquiring for help. The center is completely donor and community supported.
“We were able to raise our entire budget through corporate sponsorships,” Black said of the walk.
