Amazing creativity

Pablo Picasso, who was one of the greatest and most influential artists of the 20th century, was quoted in saying “every child is an artist.”
His statement was certainly apparent Sunday during the Vicksburg Art Association sponsored Youth Art Show.
“We had over 350 entries into 24 categories,” Vicksburg High School art teacher Lisa Grant said.
The annual event encompassed local 7th through 12th grade students from VHS, Warren Central High School, St. Aloysius High School and a self-entered student from Midway Christian, Grant said.
Former WCHS art teacher Jaime Coon served as this year’s chairman.
“The VAA has held the Youth Art Show for several years. I remember participating as a budding artist when I was in high school in the mid 1990’s. I’ve had the honor of chairing the show since 2011 when I began teaching at Warren Central, but I participated as a contributing teacher at Chamberlain-Hunt Academy for several years before that when Nancy Mitchell chaired it,” Coon said.
After discovering many of the students had a desire to also work in ceramics and sculpture, Coon said a couple of years ago the teachers decided to make multiple categories for ceramics, which include wheel-thrown, slab work and tea sets.
“This move made it easier to judge and easier to feature more of the talented individuals. This year we had 12 3-dimensional categories and 12 2-dimensional categories,” she said.
James Smithhart served as the judge for the Youth Art show.
“He is a local artist who enjoys working in several different mediums, making him an ideal judge, and often with a local artist serving as judge, it is one of the best opportunities to see what the visual arts departments of our area schools have been up to all year.” Coon said.
Smithhart graduated from Delta State University with a masters degree in art and taught at All Saints for 29 years, as well as other schools in various capacities.
The Youth Art Show was held at the Constitution Firehouse Gallery.
Megan Green, a senior at VHS won first place Best in Show with “True Test of Patience.”
“I was completely shocked I had won. My mouth fell to the floor when I saw the ribbon. My hard work had paid off,” Green said.
The idea behind her creation was to make a bowl people could look at, she said.
Green plans to attend the New York Institute of Art and Design and major in photography and interior design.
Second place Best in Show went to Bergeron Fink, a senior at WCHS and third place went to Sam Greer, a sophomore at WCHS.
This was Fink’s second year in a row to win second place Best in Show, she said.
“I am very proud of the piece (“Beauty”),” and added because of her successes, she has decided to major in sculptural art at DSU.
The People’s Choice award went to Lacey Williams, who is a junior at VHS for her piece entitled “Selfie.”
