By her own high standards, Tuesday’s round was fairly average for Karley Whittington. It still was plenty good enough to leave everyone else in the dust.
Whittington shot a 2-under par 70 to earn medalist honors and lead Warren Central to the team championship at the Class III, Region 3 girls’ tournament at Clear Creek Golf Course. Whittington beat Madison Central’s Anne Carrie Swoope by 15 shots for the individual title, and the Lady Vikes edged Madison 172-177 for the team championship.
“I hit the ball pretty solid. I have to practice on a few things before state,” Whittington said. “Last year (70) was a really good score, but now I expect more.”
Northwest Rankin’s Cecilia Bruce was third in the individual standings, with a 91, and Madison Central’s Savannah Murphy was fourth with a 92.
Clinton was third in the team standings, with a total of 200, and Northwest Rankin was fourth at 209.
Mia Wamsley shot a 102 and Sydney Stuart a 106 to round out Warren Central’s team score. Those two, along with Whittington, will head to The Oaks in Pass Christian for the MHSAA Class III state tournament Monday and Tuesday.
Whittington is the two-time defending individual state champion, and Warren Central is trying to reclaim the team title it won in 2014 but lost last year.
