A great season for Warren Central tennis was extended for at least another day on Monday with a string of solid performances.

The Vikings collected wins in four of their six events in the first round of the MHSAA Class 6A individual tournament at Parham Bridges Park in Jackson. Lauren Davis and Alex Velazquez won in girls’ and boys’ singles, while the doubles teams of George Wilkerson and Brent Styles and Joseph Jabour and Amanda Boleware were also victorious.

All of the Vikings advanced to second-round matches Tuesday beginning at 10 a.m.

Velazquez beat Biloxi’s Jacob Butera 7-5, 6-1 and will face Meridian’s Ethan Clopton in the second round. Clopton beat Mac Brankstone of Hernando 6-1, 6-1.

In girls’ singles, Davis defeated Tia Pearson of Horn Lake 6-4, 6-1. She’ll next play top-seeded Megan Humphreys of Madison Central. Humphreys cruised past D’Iberville’s Lauren Childres 6-0, 6-1.

Wilkerson and Styles beat Gulfport’s Jonathan Switzer and Jay Warren 6-4, 6-4 and advanced to face Connor Fudge and William Pratt of Madison Central. Fudge and Pratt beat Pearl’s Trey Hilton and Lucas Smith 6-0, 6-3.

Warren Central had another boys’ doubles team in the bracket, Matthew Register and William Wooten, but it did not survive the first round.

The Vikings’ second team lost 6-7, 4-6 to Will Brawner and Zak Keith of Tupelo. The girls’ doubles team of Alexa Jeffers and Olivia White also lost, 1-6, 2-6 to Olive Branch’s Emma Kate Virden and Savanna Geeslin.

WC’s mixed doubles team, however, did move on. Jabour and Boleware rallied after losing the first set and gutted out a tough three-set victory over Northwest Rankin’s John Dennis and Brooklyn Meadows 5-7, 6-4, 7-5.

Jabour and Boleware will face the No. 2 seed Sebastian Rios and Dakin Reed of Tupelo in the second round. Rios and Reed did not have to play a first-round match because Division 8-6A did not have a team qualify.

In the Class 5A tournament, Vicksburg had eight players qualify but none made it past their opening matches on Monday.

Singles players Jared Bell and Faye Valerio were both no-shows at the tournament and their opponents won by forfeit.

Christopher Albert and Jonathan Boyd were defeated in boys’ doubles by Germantown’s Alex Usher and Wallace Brewer 6-0, 6-2, and the Gators’ other team of Rashad Fisher and Chance Williams was routed 6-1, 6-1 by Oxford’s Ryan Mounce and Gordon Whitwell. Mounce and Whitwell are the No. 3 seed in the 16-team bracket.

Vicksburg’s mixed doubles team of Jon Bantugan and Sierra Shelton lost 6-0, 6-0 to the No. 2 seeded duo Trey Wegner and Rianne Taylor of Stone County.
