It’s time to make a decision

Once again the Board of Mayor and Aldermen are going to talk sports complex.

At the urging of South Ward Alderman Willis Thompson, city leaders are going to look at a proposal from a Georgia company for consulting services and the possible design, construction and possible management of a sports complex.

The board meets Tuesday to discuss the proposal.

When he presented the proposal, Thompson said the board needed to move ahead with the complex or tell residents it never intended to develop a sports complex.

He’s right. After more than a year and numerous studies and polls on the subject, it’s time for the board to act one way or the other. To use the old term, “Put up or shut up.” Either make a decision to build a sports complex or scrap the project.

If Fisher Ferry is supposed to be the site, start working on it. If you’re going someplace else, say where and how you plan to fund buying the property and its development.

And, as we have said in the past, it is our hope that the Fisher Ferry location is removed from consideration.

Mayor George Flaggs Jr. has said he wanted to be methodical with the sports complex, but what has happened is the project has become stagnant from inaction and neglect.

While Mr. Thompson should be congratulated for bringing the sports complex back to the front, this latest action should be the last on the sports complex.

Either the board moves forward and become aggressive in ironing out the remaining details ahead of next June’s reported vote on the project’s funding or … move on.

We have long supported the idea of the sports complex and the tax dollars we agree will likely come with the development of sports tourism in Vicksburg. But, we’ve talked about this project — or the chance of such a project — for far too long.

It’s time for the board to make a decision.
