NORMAN, Okla. — The greatest season in the history of Ole Miss’ women’s softball program came to an end Sunday.
Paige Parker struck out nine batters in a four-hit shutout, Erin Miller had two hits and drove in two runs, and Oklahoma beat Ole Miss 3-0 to win the NCAA Tournament’s Norman Regional.
Ole Miss (41-22) set a school record for wins in a season and achieved several other milestones. It reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time and won a game in the SEC Tournament for the first time.
“I’m going to start with it’s a great day to be a Rebel. We are excited about where our program is headed. I’m proud of what our girls have accomplished this entire year,” Ole Miss coach Mike Smith said. “I just told the girls after the game that nobody outside of our program, within our family, thought that we would win 41 games, have an opportunity to get to a regional and then to be able to play in a regional Final, and do what we were able to do.”
Oklahoma (50-7) advanced to the super regional round for the seventh consecutive season. Ole Miss needed to beat the Sooners twice on Sunday to advance, and Parker ensured that wasn’t going to happen.
Parker (31-3) retired the first 11 batters she faced before Ashton Lampton singled with two outs in the fourth inning.
Only one of Ole Miss’ five baserunners got past first base, and none got past second.
“I felt really good today, just working on spinning the ball through the zone, trying to get some of those swing-and-misses, and just knowing that if they did put the ball in play, that my defense was going to be there to back me up,” Parker said.
Ole Miss ace Madi Osias (23-10) was good enough to match Parker for a while, but not good enough to beat her.
Osias took a shutout into the fifth inning and retired eight batters in a row at one point. Finally, in the fifth, a leadoff single by Fale Aviu led to an RBI single by Miller that brought in the game’s first run.
Oklahoma added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning as Fale singled and scored on a sacrifice fly, and Miller delivered another RBI single to make it 3-0.
Osias allowed eight hits in a complete-game loss. She didn’t walk a batter.
Two days earlier, when Ole Miss and Oklahoma played in a winners’ bracket game, Osias gave up six runs in 1 2/3 innings as Oklahoma won 9-1.
“I think what really changed was, between the first time we played and the second time that we played, was (assistant) coach (Taryne) Mowatt told me that it looked kind of like I’m scared to throw to their hitters and she just reminded me that I had great games in the past against Florida, which is the No. 1 team in the nation, and Tennessee and Georgia and all of those great teams in the SEC,” Osias said. “When I came into the game today I just thought it was another team that we were playing, another team that had great hitters, and just have to go at them and throw strikes at them.”
