CLEVELAND, Miss. — In three months, Jake Mangum went from fresh-faced freshman to Ferriss Trophy winner.

Mangum, Mississippi State’s hard-hitting freshman outfielder, won the C Spire Ferriss Trophy as Mississippi’s top college baseball player on Monday.

The former Jackson Prep star is the first freshman to win the award in its 12-year history. Also on Monday, he was named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year.

“There are so many people in the state of Mississippi who deserve this. It meant a lot and it was special,” Mangum said.

Mangum led the SEC in hitting this season with a .427 average. He also ranks third nationally in that category. He helped the Bulldogs earn the No. 1 seed in the SEC Tournament and their first regular-season SEC championship since 1989.

Mississippi State (40-14-1) received a first-round bye in the tournament and will play Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. against either Kentucky (32-24) or Alabama (31-24).

MSU’s John Cohen was named the SEC Coach of the Year on Monday.

“It really has been a special year so far, and we don’t want it to end,” Mangum said.

Mangum is the fifth Mississippi State player to win the Ferriss Trophy, and beat out two of his teammates to do it.

Among the five finalists were Mississippi State outfielder-pitcher Reid Humphreys and pitcher Dakota Hudson. The other finalists were Ole Miss centerfielder J.B. Woodman and Delta State outfielder Will Robertson.

“I would have never gotten the award if it wasn’t for my teammates. It never would’ve happened if it weren’t for the veterans on the team helping me prepare to get where I am today,” Mangum said. “Our outfield is just so deep, they’ve all really helped me out. Going into the season, I had no idea what to expect in the SEC. I had no idea how tough Sunday games are to win. They really did help me out a lot.”

Some of the Ferris Trophy losers did get a consolation prize.

Woodman and Hudson were named first-team All-SEC in voting by the league’s coaches. Woodman hit .319 this season and led Ole Miss in runs (47), RBIs (49) and slugging percentage. Woodman was also on the All-Defensive team.

Hudson is in the top 10 in the SEC in several pitching categories and has thrown complete-game shutouts in each of his last two outings.

Texas A&M’s Boomer White was the SEC Player of the Year, and Florida’s Logan Shore was the Pitcher of the Year.

Among the others earning first-team All-SEC honors were Ole Miss catcher Henri Lartigue, Mississippi State first baseman Nathaniel Lowe, MSU designated hitter Jack Kruger, and LSU’s Kramer Robertson and Bryce Jordan.

Earning second-team honors were Ole Miss’ Tate Blackman and Mississippi State’s Brent Rooker.
