The first leg of the Road to Omaha will run through Mississippi — and the rest of the south.

Ole Miss and Mississippi State were among seven Southeastern Conference teams selected to host regionals in the NCAA baseball tournament that begins Friday.

It’s the seventh time that Ole Miss has hosted a regional, and the 13th time for Mississippi State.

Ole Miss finished with a 43-17 record, and Mississippi State with a 41-16-1 record that included the SEC regular-season championship.

“To be chosen to host amongst a great field of participants is a huge honor. It’s also a tremendous responsibility for our athletic department and its something I think we’ve done very well in the past,” Mississippi State coach John Cohen said. “We look forward to this opportunity and to seeing all of our great fans at the Carnegie Hall of College Baseball this weekend.”

The top eight national seeds ­— which will host super regionals if they make it through the first weekend — and the full 64-team tournament bracket will be unveiled Monday morning. The NCAA Tournament Selection Show will air on ESPNU at 11 a.m.

The 16 regional sites were announced by the NCAA on Sunday evening, and nearly all of them came from the SEC and Atlantic Coast Conferences. The two leagues combined will host 13 of the 16 regionals, with the strays going to TCU and Texas Tech of the Big 12, and Louisiana-Lafayette of the Sun Belt Conference.

The other SEC teams picked to host are LSU, Vanderbilt, South Carolina, Florida, and conference tournament champion Texas A&M.

The ACC hosts are Clemson, Florida State, Louisville, Miami, North Carolina State and defending national champion Virginia.

This is the first time since the current tournament format was adopted in 1999 that no regionals will be held west of the Rocky Mountains.

Each regional includes four teams in a double-elimination format, with the winners advancing to the super regionals. The eight super regional winners advance to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska. All of the regional hosts are guaranteed spots in the NCAA Tournament.

Mississippi State last hosted a regional in 2013, and Ole Miss in 2014.

“We are excited to host another regional at Swayze Field in front of our outstanding fans,” Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco said in a school release. “To serve as a host for the NCAA Tournament is a terrific reward for our team’s success this season.”
