A handgun was among the items reported stolen in five auto burglaries occurring in the city over the extended Memorial Day weekend, Vicksburg police Lt. Troy Kimble said.

“In four of those burglaries, either the (car) doors were unlocked or the windows were down,” Kimble said. “We want remind people to take their valuables out of their cars and secure their vehicles when they leave them.”

The burglaries occurred over Saturday and Sunday:

• A duffle bag was reported taken Sunday about 11:30 p.m. from a car parked in the 1200 block of Main Street. The owner told police he was attending a party and went outside to find the passenger side window of the car broken and the hood of his car up.

• About 9 a.m. Saturday, a small amount of cash was reported taken from a car parked in the 100 block of Rue Vernet.

• About 2 1/2 hours later, at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, a Smith & Wesson 9mm handgun and a wallet with credit cards were reported taken from a car parked in the 2500 block of Manor Drive.

• At 11:35 a.m. Saturday, a cell phone was reported taken from a vehicle parked in the 900 block of Naitonal Street, while nothing was reported missing from a car that had been broken into and ransacked Saturday night in the 200 block of Lakewood Drive.
