WC teammates Nesmith, Boolos to play together in all-star game

It took Brooks Boolos and Taft Nesmith a second to think about how long they’ve been playing baseball together. From their days with the Vicksburg Venom tournament team right through their senior year at Warren Central, there hasn’t been a time when they weren’t teammates.
“Since we were 10? 11?” Boolos asked Nesmith as the two sat together in Warren Central’s dugout.
After all that time, they now have just one game left to play together.
Boolos and Nesmith will be teammates for the final time when they suit up in the Crossroads Diamond Club All-Star Game June 4 at Trustmark Park. They’ll play for the North All-Stars in the Class 5A-6A game that begins at 5 p.m. After that, they’ll head off to their respective college careers. Boolos, a shortstop, has signed with Northwest Mississippi Community College. Nesmith, a pitcher, has signed with Southwest Mississippi.
“On to new things,” Boolos said wistfully.
The all-star thing is actually a bit old for Nesmith. He played in the inaugural juniors all-star game last year. That game was discontinued for 2016, so he has the rare distinction of being a two-time all-star.
The left-hander went 4-3 with a 2.62 ERA in a team-high 48 2/3 innings this season. He struck out 48 batters and only walked 16.
“It’s cool, because that year was the only year they did the juniors and I don’t think they’re going to do it this year. So it’s cool to be a two-time all-star,” Nesmith said.
Boolos is making his all-star debut, but will still be in a familiar setting. He said he’s played with or against most of the other players on the roster at one time or another and knew most of them.
“My roommate next year is one of them,” he said.
The all-star game will serve as a sendoff for Boolos, who has been a mainstay in Warren Central’s program. He was a four-year starter who hit .319 for his career and also served as the team’s closer on the mound.
Boolos hit .337 this season, with 18 RBIs and 16 runs scored to help the Vikings win their second consecutive Division 4-6A championship. He was 4-for-8 with an RBI and three runs scored in the Vikings’ second-round playoff series against Northwest Rankin, which they lost in three games.
“It’s an honor,” Boolos said of the all-star selection. “I’m glad to represent Warren Central.”
